Yes, you still need a key if you have a keyless entry system for your automobile. A lot of people think that if they have a keyless entry system, they can do away with their keys entirely. You’d be surprised how many people find themselves locked out of their cars because they think this.
Is a Key Really Necessary?
Even with cars that were made in the past 10 years, a key was still required to start the ignition, even if you had a keyless entry system to get into the automobile. In fact, often the key that started the ignition was part of the keyless entry system, but the entire assembly was made onto the key itself. This virtually guaranteed that you always had the key with you because you didn’t really have a choice.
However, newer cars with keyless ignition systems have all but eliminated the need to have a key with you in order to get in and start the automobile. As a direct result, a lot of people have stopped carrying their keys, right up until they find themselves in hot water because of it.
The Reason You Need to Carry Your Key
Your keyless entry system is battery-powered. It doesn’t use the type of batteries that you typically put into a remote control, but more like the ones that power watches or hearing aids. Nevertheless, those batteries do eventually run down, and they don’t always give you a warning that they’re about to do so. A lot of the time, they work perfectly fine one moment, and they don’t work at all the next. This leaves you in a situation where you can no longer get into your own car.
Granted, the keyless ignition systems allow you to start the car either remotely or by pushing a button on the interior of the car, but none of that does you any good if the system that you use to start it remotely isn’t working and you can’t get access to the car’s interior, to begin with. This leaves you in a situation where you are now dependent on an auto locksmith to get into your own car.
It’s Better to be Prepared
As you might have guessed by now, this can cause a number of problems, especially if you’re already running behind and you end up locked out of your car. Most people don’t realize that this could become a problem until it actually happens to them. Instead, they get it into their head that they don’t need an actual key to unlock the car or even start it, so why bother keeping it with them?
This method usually works just fine for several years, right up until their keyless entry system stops working because the batteries are dead. The truth is, it’s easy to get into this habit when your car is newer because you don’t think you really have to carry it with you. You naturally assume that the keyless entry system will work the way it was designed to. As the car gets older, you’ve already gotten into the habit of not carrying the key with you or worse yet, leaving the key in the console of a locked car. The next thing you know, your keyless entry system stops working, and it leaves you high and dry in the process.
Carrying Your Key Can Save You Money
This is exactly why you should always carry your key with you, just as if you had to have it in your physical possession in order to unlock that door. One of these days, that’s exactly what you’re going to have to do. The problem is, you’re not likely to have a warning from your keyless entry system that tells you ahead of time that this day is coming. It’s a lot like many other areas of life. If you’re not prepared for it, it’s likely to get the best of you. It doesn’t mean it will happen tomorrow, next week or even next month, but if you’re not carrying your key with you, it will surely happen eventually.
You basically have two choices here. You can choose not to carry your key and rely on that keyless entry system to work forever, in which case you will undoubtedly find yourself calling an auto locksmith one of these days. Your better option is to simply carry the key with you and make sure that you have it on your person so that you can use it when needed. It can save you a lot of frustration later down the road if you make just a little effort to be prepared now.
