You’re running late for work, and you haven’t gotten the kids off to school yet. It’s one of those mornings where everything seems to be running behind schedule and the harder you try to catch up, the further you fall behind. To make matters worse, you just realized that you locked your keys in your car last night and you can’t find your spare.
It’s one of those days where you have more errands to run than any person could ever hope to fit into their schedule. Unfortunately, while focusing on errands, you didn’t realize that you left the key in the ignition of your automobile and inadvertently locked the door when you got out. You could easily find yourself in any of these scenarios. The question is, how do you handle it when it happens to you?
The Obvious Answer
Obviously, the first thing you need to do is contact an auto locksmith so you can get access to your car. Hopefully, you didn’t also lock your purse and phone in the car! The question now is, what to do with your time while you’re waiting. Usually, locksmiths get there quickly. After all, it’s their job to help with emergencies.
However, sometimes they can’t always get there within the next five or ten minutes so it might be a good idea to figure out what you’re going to do in the meantime. In other words, how are you going to make the most of the situation? This is especially true if the situation finds you in an unfamiliar neighborhood or it’s late at night, and you don’t want to stand out there by yourself, waiting by your car. Fortunately, there are things you can do to stay safe.
If You’re in a Busy Place
This is the perfect situation to stay calm and take a few minutes for yourself, even if they are unplanned. Find a nearby coffee shop or something similar and let the locksmith know where you’ll be so that they won’t have any trouble finding you when they get there.
Chances are, the locksmith will get there before you are finished, but it gives you a chance to reset the way your day is going. Instead of becoming increasingly frustrated about things, you might actually find that you enjoy having a few minutes to yourself without so many additional demands on your time. After all, you can’t do anything but wait, so you might as well make the most of it.
If You’re in a Secluded Area
Being locked out in a secluded area can be somewhat frightening. The best thing you can do is find an area that’s well-lit and wait there. If there is an area nearby that has some level of activity, go there, and wait for the locksmith. Wherever you go, keep your cell phone with you and make sure that you have a good signal.
Make sure that you’re aware of your surroundings and don’t let your guard down. One of the most important things you can do is not look frightened, lost, or frustrated. Look like you belong no matter what you choose to do. You’re a lot less likely to find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation if you take charge as much as possible instead of looking vulnerable.
If You’re Home
This is probably the easiest scenario. If you need an auto locksmith because you locked the keys in your car while it was sitting in your own driveway, just think of all the things you can get done inside the house, provided you haven’t also locked yourself out of the house. If you locked yourself out of both your car and your home, take that time to visit a neighbor or do something outdoors. The reality of the situation is that there are all kinds of opportunities around you. You just have to be willing to look around and find them.
Locking your keys inside your car is never fun, but you can learn to make the most of whatever the day brings. The happiest people in the world learn to be flexible and roll with the punches. Granted, you might not be able to complete your to-do list for the day, but you just might end up doing something far more important or fun. In the end, the way you handle an auto lockout situation is completely in your control.
